Will Cannabis Oil Cure Seizures?

CBD Oil and Epilepsy

Children with uncontrollable epilepsy are being given a new lease on life with treatment from a strain of marijuana rich in cannabidiol (CBD) – the major non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

As more and more positive outcomes for some children with uncontrollable epilepsy continue to hit the news, parents of children with epilepsy have been clamoring for additional information and a chance for their children to try the new treatment.

Parents of children who have no other treatments left to try, must weigh the very real dangers and challenges a constantly seizing child faces everyday, verses the possible side effects from these CBD-rich marijuana extracts, which may include increased risk of serious psychiatric disorders and long-term cognitive problems.

With little to no relief of their symptoms and a life wrought with many debilitating side effects from pharmaceuticals, people who have tried a myriad of mind-numbing medications, brain surgeries, diets and alternative therapies, have in my opinion little to look forward to in terms of a normal life.

Because Scientists don’t fully understand the long-term effects early marijuana use may have on children, and because of the tight restriction the FDA and DEA have placed on marijuana and its compounds, CBD use in people with epilepsy has yet to be fully clinically evaluated.

Weather or not  medical marijuana is the answer for all children with epilepsy is still largely unknown. Much more needs to be done to find treatments and a cure for all forms of epilepsy, which affect more people than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s combined.

 More Research Needed

In an attempt to determine if specific genetic components can explain why some epilepsy patients see positive results from ingesting Charlotte’s Web, while others do not, researchers at the University of Colorado will be at the forefront in what is believed to be the first study of its kind.

They will study the genes of those with a kind of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome who have been treated with a strain of medical marijuana known as Charlotte’s Web.

The plant named after Charlotte Figi, a young girl who was the first epilepsy patient successfully treated with the strain is  grown by five brothers in Colorado through a non-profit organization called Realm of Caring.

Low in THC, the compound that produces marijuana’s psychoactive effects, and high in CBD, a compound believed to reduce seizures, is administered to epilepsy patients in the form of an oil.

“This study will hopefully lead to answers for this question and others”, says Edward Maa, the principal investigator of the Charlotte’s Web study, an assistant professor at the CU School of Medicine and chief of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Programs at Denver Health.

This could be a first step toward building a body of research on how and why medical marijuana can be used to treat epilepsy.

Scientists would no doubt desire to test not only pure CBD, but also high CBD/low THC cannabis, pure THC and other types of medical marijuana in epilepsy in order to clearly define the efficacy of these and other combinations on seizure control and the genesis of epilepsy.

Parents as well as  researchers are cautiously optimistic that CBD may be a promising new treatment on the horizon for many people. Along with seizure relief,  other beneficial effects include increased alertness, better mood, and improved sleep. Side effects included drowsiness and fatigue.

Anecdotal evidence suggests Charlotte’s Web can be highly effective in treating epileptic seizures, but  regulatory hurdles make it difficult for researchers to gain access to marijuana rich in CBD . These restrictions to obtain access to marijuana, or any chemical found in it, are hindering scientific advancement.

Thankfully with groups such as CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy) and others who are committed to helping researchers overcome these obstacles to advance research in this important area, more will, and must be done.

Good News on the Horizon

Democratic Sens. Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as Republican Sen. Rand Paul, unveiled arguably the most progressive medical marijuana legislation is history.

Their new bill — The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act — would end federal prohibition of medical marijuana and also introduce a host of other reforms aiming to curb restrictions on its transport, prescription and availability.

The effects of long term, uncontrolled seizures are known – continued regression, intellectual disability, and even death.

Research and clinical studies will take years to complete, but until then, I believe we should show compassion for the parents of children suffering from intractable epilepsy- not to mention the child itself, as time is not on the side of many of these children with unrelenting seizures.mother
Let’s allow parents to make the choice which shows the most promise. They have suffered for far too long, unable to obtain this promising medicine that may ultimately save their child’s young life!

Update

Realm of Caring  administers Charlotte’s Web, one of the best-known CBD strains in America

The Realm of Caring Foundation, is a nonprofit organization that provides cannabis to adults and children suffering from a host of diseases, including epilepsy, cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s, to those who cannot afford this treatment.

“Families on Realm of Caring’s out-of-state wait list received emails this week that Charlotte’s Web Hemp Oil will now be available for shipping to all 50 states.

UPDATE 10/2/2014:Parents in contact with RoC report that the organization will be contacting wait-listed families in groups of 1,000.”

The email from Realm of Caring explains that the Charlotte’s Web product they will be shipping falls within the federally acceptable limit of less than .3% THC for classification as a hemp-derived food product.”

Hi Tom, I have been a fan of medical marijuana for a long time. I have seen how people with different illnesses have been helped. If my kids had epileptic seizures I think I would prefer this natural cannabis-oil over any chemical drug the pharmacist would be able to provide.

Hi Marith- I agree and believe that parents should be allowed to make the choice which shows the most promise. As I mentioned in the Post- They have suffered for far too long, unable to obtain this promising medicine that may ultimately save their child’s young life!

Hi Tom,

I have been a firm believer in the medical benefits of marijuana for about my whole life. I have also supported it and if they would ever put it on the ballot I would vote to legalize it as I have seen it help many people.

Not only would it help countless people live pain free and not have to suffer, it would also bring down the crime rate, boost the economy, and create more jobs. This post has really helped me learn more of the benefits of this miracle plant and how this may be the cure to just about any illness out there.

Thank you so much for sharing this information with everyone here.

Cheers
Your Friend, Scott

Hi Scott- There are so many benefits to CBD oil and I believe it is time now to fully legalize this healthy substance so more research can be done. Like you mentioned this can be a true Godsend for so many people currently suffering from various illnesses with little to no hope.

CBD oil has many benefits, I just source the cannabis oil from charlottewebcannabis@gmail.com to treat my daughter’s epilepsy.

Hi Nikky- I am sorry to hear that your daughter is an epileptic, but I know that now there is something available that really works to alleviate seizures, and that is cannabis oil. I am an advocate for Realm of Caring and CW Botanicals, which is where you can purchase Charlotte’s Web cannabis oil for those who are suffering from epilepsy.

    All the best-Tom
