The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live It, is the ultimate practical guide for all those interested in seeking simpler and more environmentally responsible ways of  living off the land, from a man who truly lived the self-sufficient life.

To Live in harmony with the land and be able to harness natural forms of energy is the goal of  The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live It.

In this book you will not only learn the philosophy of self-sufficiency and its power to transform lives and create communities, but the skills necessary to live independently, in harmony with the land harnessing natural forms of energy, raising crops and keeping livestock.

You will also learn how to preserve foodstuffs, make beer and wine, basketry, carpentry, weaving, and much more.

The gardening section of the book provides in-depth, organic gardening advice, with good information about keeping the soil working for you and healthy with crop rotation.

Growing grains, the basics of extending the season, as well as how to grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and building and using a greenhouse are also taught.

New, sometimes foreign, concepts are explained well. There is no filler and fluff. More time is spent explaining relevant topics with the basic truth “the more self sufficient we are, the more free we are.”

The entire human population of the world at one time made their own clothing, tools, weapons, boats and huts. Gathering, hunting, herding and farming to find and grow their own food.

The wild food supply dwindled as the population of the world grew, forcing people to specialize, and to rely on herding and farming more and relying less upon gathering and hunting.

Nowadays many farmers produce food on specialized farms, and a  large part of the worlds population now depends on these farmers to produce their food for them. Many people in developed nations now depend on their job salaries to buy food, clothes, and shelter, rather than making these things from raw materials found in the environment.

There are still some societies which continue to be self-sufficient, never having given up traditional ways of food gathering and food producing.

If you are interested in learning more about sustainable living, I highly recommend this book by John Seymour that I have read and keep as reference myself. It’s a great book, and definitely one to have for your self-sufficiency library. You can order it here at
