Paleo DietReview

The Paleo diet was first advocated in the 1970s, and has been slowly gaining steam over the better part of the last decade. In 2013, Loren Cordain published ‘The Paleo Diet (Revised) Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat’.

This bestselling book -over 100,00 copies sold  along with a series of other related books, tells the reader that to lose weight by eliminating grains, dairy, refined sugars, and processed foods from our diets, we, too can revert back to the diet of our ancestors – the Paleo Diet.

It’s really interesting to read about the positive results people have had with the diet. Those trying it for short-term weight loss have found some amazing results. Of course, I wanted to have a look for myself and see what all the fuss was about. Well, after reading this book and having a quick search through current research being done, I have a few pros and cons for all of  you-

 Pros

  • The diet promotes a generally healthy way of eating. Lots of fruit and vegetables exactly what holistic practitioners have been telling us for decades as well as to-
  • Walk more – get out there and get some exercise.
  • Suggests getting rid of our processed food – especially those with lots of processed sugar.
  • The book is medically researched
  • Eat foods that are low in refined sugars and grains, trans fats, salt and high-glycemic carbohydrates.
  • Cordain’s assertions have helped many people

 Cons

  • Despite the positive aspects of the diet, of which there are many, the author advocates some things that are down right wrong and not at all supported by  scientific literature.
  • For instance, he suggests we should have a low-salt diet; there is really no evidence to support this claim. Of course, our ancestors ate less salt, but not quite to the levels he’s suggesting.
  • No starchy vegetables? Hmmm, not sure about this one. Potatoes are incredibly nutritious, can help prevent scurvy and are a great source of other vitamins. So are beans, peas, and other legumes.

However with that said he does deliver a  healthy dose of individual anecdotes, practical tips, and recipes guiding the reader with his suggestions to a sustainable lifestyle, rather than a simple month-long diet.

Cordain also discusses cooking recommendations with three levels of diet and six weeks of sample menus including recipes as well as sources for wild game.

Recommendations

For those of you looking to get an in depth  perspective of the Paleo Diet  this book is worth the read. The main tenants of the Paleo Diet should make sense to all of us-

  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables! Also incorporate meat , nuts, eggs, and honey.
  • Get moving! Our ancestors were way more active than we are now. It’s good for your heart and keeps the weight off.
  • Avoid processed foods and eat foods that are low in refined sugars, grains and trans fats.

  • While there is helpful information to get started on the Paleo diet, the book is lacking in recipes.
  • The Book provides a simple introduction to the paleo diet but seriously lacks hard data.

Recommendations

John Chatham’s book is clearly written in an understandable manner, perfectly suited for the Paleo beginner.

  • Book is huge – like a college textbook.
  • This book is not for someone on a limited budget.

 Recommendations

The recipes in Practical Paleo are exceptional. This book will not only feed your brain with knowledge of the Paleo Diet, but also nourish your body with outstanding recipes. I highly recommend this book if you are seriously considering the Paleo Diet.

Tom, great review. I don’t think I’m ready to go Paleo, but I certainly appreciate the information. So, many people are on Paleo, talking about Paleo, thinking about going on Paleo, it’s good to have enough information to discuss it with them intelligently.
